Solar power now accounts for 25% of Pakistan’s electricity generation, according to BloombergNEF. This increase coincides with a significant drop in the share of imported gas in the country’s energy mix, which has fallen below 10% due to rising solar capacity and enhanced domestic gas production.
The expansion of solar energy in Pakistan has been substantial, with distributed solar generation reportedly growing from nearly zero in fiscal year 2017 to approximately 46% of grid sales by fiscal year 2025. This rapid integration illustrates how solar energy has climbed significantly within the overall energy landscape of Pakistan.
In addition, the proliferation of rooftop solar systems has been noticeable, although it is estimated that around 85% of these installations remain unregistered. Consumers often prefer self-consumption options to minimize costs associated with formal net metering schemes, further indicating a shift towards decentralized energy solutions.
This broader shift toward solar energy and its growing role in power generation may be relevant in the context of energy security and economic implications for Pakistan moving forward.
